Atlas Backyard Sheds Celebrates 35 Years in Business

Company Will Team With Habitat For Humanity to Build a Themed Playhouse in Downtown Tyler Plaza

Tyler, TX – February 8, 2017 – If there’s a backyard shed in Tyler, Texas, chances are it was built by Atlas Backyard Sheds (www.atlasbackyardsheds.com).  For 35 years now, three generations of the Downs family have been transforming backyard spaces into living spaces with the construction of sheds, garages, decks, fences, patio covers, hot tubs, pools, and other small, custom-built-buildings.

Since the 1981 founding of the company in Tyler, it has since expanded to eight different locations throughout East Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, including a dedicated spa showroom in Tyler, and a ninth spa showroom set to open soon in Plano.  In fact, the company has grown so large that in 2016 it created a separate division for luxury hot tubs called Atlas Spas and Swim Spas (www.atlasspas.com).  Atlas is an authorized dealer of Master Spas hot tubs and swim spas, including the official Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spas.

To celebrate their 35th anniversary, Atlas will be partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Smith County in building a barn style playhouse for their fundraising event called Playhouses on the Plaza.  Atlas’s playhouse will be displayed along with seven other themed playhouses on the downtown Tyler plaza during the last week of the Azalea Trail, which will then be auctioned off.  It’s not the first time the business has donated their skills to Habitat for Humanity – in 2014 they helped raise the walls on the nonprofit group’s 101st home built in Tyler, Texas.

“We are always looking for ways to contribute to the community in Tyler and the surrounding area, so partnering with Habitat for Humanity made perfect sense,” said Atlas CEO, William F. Downs, Jr.  “When my father, Bill Downs, started Atlas in 1981, customer service was a top priority, and over the years as we have grown, we have kept customer satisfaction first, and I contribute that to our success.”

In the 1980s, Tyler’s population was around 70,000.  It is currently at 107,000, a 65% growth rate. Here in 2017, at a time when big box stores are offering all kinds of self-assembly, made-in-China plastic storage sheds, Atlas still builds them to last with wood, by hand, using quality framing and materials.

The backyard-focused company was appropriately launched in a backyard itself.  It was behind the house in Tyler, Texas, where William F. Downs, Sr. and his wife, Shirley Downs with the help of their son, William F. Downs, Jr., began commercially building sheds. At that time each shed was primarily made of metal – built 100% by hand, all nails and no screws, which was a time-intensive process.  The company was called Atlas Portable Buildings then, and as consumer demands and tastes have changed, the company has continued to evolve to provide all the elements that make suburban life.  Today, Atlas Backyard Sheds are the backyard professionals, providing shade, cool dips in a pool, relaxing hot tubs and swim spas along with any size custom building.

Founder, William F. Downs, Sr., passed away in 2015 at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy with his company.  William F. Downs, Jr.  is the CEO and President of Atlas, working alongside his sons, Willie and Robert, who are handling various aspects of the company.  They employ a staff of 32.

Why Install a Patio Cover?

Written by Michelle Cramer on . Posted in Atlas Products, Home Improvements

Making your outdoor living spaces the best they can be… that’s what Atlas Buildings, Pools & Spas is here for. We offer a variety of outdoor living products, like hot tubs, swim spas, pools and storage buildings. What you might not know is that Atlas also offers patio covers. Check out our patio covers web page for photos of projects we’ve done, and consider the reasons why you might want to add a patio cover to your list of projects.

Control Sun and Shade Levels

Our representatives at Atlas are excited to help create the patio cover that works best for your outdoor living space. Patio covers are easy to install, and we can customize your cover so you enjoy the perfect balance of sun and shade. Whether you want a space that provides full shade, a space where you can sit plants in the sun, or something in between, we have a solution for you.

Extend Your Living Space

The comforts of the indoors are available on your patio when you invest in a patio cover from Atlas. Have an old deck? Turn it into a relaxing spot to get away simply by adding a patio cover. Want an outdoor area that the kids can use? The patio won’t be too hot for sensitive skin when you have a patio cover. Want to create an outdoor kitchen? Protect your appliances and create a luxurious outdoor eating area when you install a patio cover. It’s a great deal — you get all the benefits of extra square footage without the expensive cost of an addition.

Increase the Value of Your Home

Patio covers are an affordable home improvement project that can actually increase the resale value of your home. When a potential home buyer compares your house to the one down the street, the patio cover is an immediate bonus for you.

OverhangEnjoy Protection From the Weather

The overbearing, hot sun also brings harmful UV rays with it. A patio cover from Atlas will reduce the UV rays, or even eliminate them altogether. Never again will you have to worry about getting too hot or getting a sunburn when you sit on your patio in the summer, because the patio cover will always provide the perfect amount of shade. A patio cover is also ideal on rainy days, because you can sit outside and enjoy the smell of the rain without getting wet.

Take a Stay-cation

There’s no need to jet away to an exotic island resort when you have access to a relaxing outdoor getaway right in your own backyard. Get out your barbecue grill, invite your favorite friends over (or keep it quaint if  you prefer), pour your favorite summer beverages and you can relax. There’s no need to stand in line at the airport, get lost trying to find your hotel, or spend a bunch of money. You can get the R&R you deserve when you turn your backyard into an oasis. Call an Atlas representative today and we can tell you how a patio cover would work for your deck or patio area. Financing options are available, so you can enjoy the outdoors like you’ve never enjoyed them before. Make a decision that the entire family will enjoy! All of us at Atlas are happy to help you out.

Organizing Your Storage Building

Written by Michelle Cramer on . Posted in Tips From the Experts

An Atlas storage building is a great investment, and we want to help you get the most out of it. Having a great place to put your things is essential, but properly organizing your belongings is important too. Consider these tips so you can maximize the space you have available in your storage building.

Building InsideCreate a Plan

Before you start putting items into your Atlas storage building, take a few minutes to work out a plan. Knowing what’s in storage will help keep you from buying items you already have, and it makes it easier to find the items you have stored.

Think about the space you have available, and then think about what you need to store. If the two don’t match, then you need to downsize your stuff or upgrade your storage building. Once you decide what will go into your storage unit, think about what you use the most. Those items will need to be close to the door or in a location you can access easily. Items you use rarely, like Christmas decor, can be placed in the back because you only need to pull them out once a year.

Make the Most of Your Space

Boxes and storage tubs can sit on shelving, or they can stack on top of each other. Make sure each box and each storage tub is clearly labeled so you can quickly access what you need.

When it comes to large yard tools, try to avoid storing them in a corner or in a tub. Instead, secure them to the wall to free up floor space. You can visit your local home improvement store to buy gadgets specifically designed for these tools, you can run a thick piece of twine between two hooks attached to the wall (the twine keeps the lawn tools from falling forward) or you could drive nails into the wall and hang the tools on the nails.

If you need to add shelving to your space, consider adjustable wire shelves. Good quality wire shelves are strong enough to hold boxes, but being able to adjust them means you can affordably change and modify your shelving needs as your storage needs change.

Tips From the Experts

Organization tips abound on the Internet, so we’ve narrowed it down to some of the best recommendations.

To organize tools, use a magnetic bar. It’s a trick that mechanics have long used to store tools in their shop and, according to Better Homes & Gardens, it’s ideal for all types of metal tools. “Choose a bar with a magnet strong enough to hold the weight of your tools and you’ll always have them within reach.”

Martha Stewart suggests using a bike basket as a place to store odds and ends. “It’s sturdy, charming, and just the right size to hold gloves, twine, and other essentials,” the website says. “An old basket that’s missing its straps is perfect for the job, but you could also use a new one. Hang the basket by its handlebar-strap holes on pegs in the wall.”
According to Bob Vila, a great organization tool for a garage or a shed is a pegboard. “I started thinking of all the ways that Pegboard would help me organize my life. My dog’s leash, which I am forever misplacing, would have a permanent place. I could install some shelves to hold old books and magazines.  And, it would definitely help me keep my tools and other items organized in my garage and basement. The more I think about it, I realize that the possibilities are endless.” Armed with a plan for what you’ll store and how you will store it, you’re ready to begin. If you get in the middle of your storage building organization project and need help from Atlas, give us a call!

Home Improvement Projects Can Increase the Value of Your Home

Written by Michelle Cramer on . Posted in Home Improvements

You paid a certain amount for your home, but that number isn’t set in stone. You can’t do much to change your location, but you can do a lot to upgrade your home and add value. Before you start the renovation process, though, it’s important to make a plan. The best way to ensure you get the most out of your home improvement project is if you follow the right steps.

Pick the Right Projects

Home ImprovementsSome home improvement projects give you more bang for your buck than others. For example, kitchen and bathroom renovations are a good way to add value to your home. Projects that provide storage solutions, such as adding a garage or a storage building, are a great idea if you’re looking to sell your home. These projects allow you to declutter the garage, making room for vehicles to park in there. Even adding a swimming pool, if you’re in a warmer climate, could add value.

The exact amount each project will add to your home varies based on the renovation process, the price of your home, and your neighborhood. However, you can be sure that any upgrade you do to your home will be appreciated and recognized when the time comes to sell.

Choose Quality Products

Home improvement for value 2A renovation project is a good idea, unless you use poor-quality materials. Decks, fences, and patios that aren’t made to withstand the heat won’t last for very long. Ask a lot of questions about the product that will be used during the renovation to make sure it stands up to the quality that you would expect. Quality outdoor products make the house look better by adding to the curb appeal. They also make your backyard more inviting, which drives up the value of your home.

Quality products not only add to the value of your home, they also add to the quality of life while you live in the home. Making improvements to your kitchen or bathroom means you’ll enjoy the space more. Adding a storage building means you have a place to neatly store your Christmas decorations and other belongings. Having a nice backyard encourages you to invite friends over for a cookout. Quality home improvement means you can actually use the product and enjoy it.

Work with a Reputable Company or Contractor

Using someone who can guarantee the finished product is an important step if you’re looking to do home improvement projects that will improve home value. In this age, when it’s easy to set up an Internet-based business, you want to make sure you’re working with someone you can trust.

Ask for references, look at other work done by the company, and check with friends who had successful renovation projects done. Atlas is a great example of a reputable company, because our storage buildings boast a high-quality siding that comes with a 50-year warranty. Quality products, plus quality workmanship, equals a successful renovation.

When it comes to increasing the value of your home, home improvement projects are the way to go. By choosing the right projects, quality products, and a reputable company to work with, you’re sure to enjoy the renovation for years to come. When the time comes to sell your home, you can feel confident about the investment that you made.

The Benefits of Financing a Home Improvement Project

Written by Michelle Cramer on . Posted in Financing, Home Improvements

Home improvement projects can really pay off. The right projects can increase the value of your home, which means you quickly add more equity. But it’s not all about the bottom line. Every project you do around the house helps you enjoy your home more, which increases your quality of life.

Which Home Improvement Projects to Finance

PatioThere are some projects, like painting, that you can pay cash for. However, the projects that really add to your equity (and your quality of life) are sometimes more than you can afford. No, it’s not time to panic. Financing your home improvement project means you can do the work, enjoy the benefits, and you don’t have to wait until you can save up enough.

When the project you want to do adds cash to your pocket, you can easily justify financing. New windows can lower your utility bill every month. A kitchen remodel increases the resale value of your home. One of the top desires for home buyers is storage space; adding a garage or a storage building to your home can appeal to that.

A deck is another home improvement project that adds to the value of your home. According to Hanley Wood’s Remodeling magazine, a midrange wood deck will recoup about 70% of its value when the house is sold.

Projects like these follow a very simple math formula: dollars in = dollars out. You put dollars into the project, and you’ll get dollars out of the project. When you have a project like that, financing is a great idea so you can start seeing return as soon as possible.

Types of Financing for Home Improvement Projects

What types of financing should you consider when you’re looking to pay for a home improvement project? Look for options that help you afford the project that will really help you get the most out of your home.

Making your project budget fit within a mortgage refinance gives you the most bang for your buck. Interest rates for mortgage and home equity loans are traditionally lower than other types of consumer credit options, meaning you’ll pay less for your project. Another cost saving option: interest on these types of loans is often tax-deductible. This type of loan is also remarkably convenient. Because it’s wrapped up with your mortgage, you only make one monthly payment.

Financing for Atlas Products

RentTo OwnIf you don’t have financing already lined up, you’re not out of luck. Financing options are available when you purchase an Atlas product; loans are available anywhere from $1,000 up to $100,000. Your ability to finance your project doesn’t depend on your credit score, and competitive finance rates are available.

Another payment option available through Atlas is our rent-to-own program. Pay a $150 refundable deposit plus your first month’s payment and you’re approved for Atlas to start on your home improvement project.

When it comes to improving your home, consider the projects that you’ll get the most out of. Increasing the value of your home is one reason to renovate, but you shouldn’t hesitate to spend money on projects that increase your quality of life too. Take a look at what the project will do for your bottom line, and then go for it.

Financing was invented to make the impossible possible… allowing you to enjoy all the benefits of your project right now. So take that leap of faith, plan the home upgrade you’ve been wanting, and then let financing make it possible.
